Located in the quiet village of Amherst NH, Souhegan High School serves the 970 students of the towns of Amherst and Mont Vernon.

Souhegan Facts:

  • Ninety-one percent of Souhegan seniors took the SATs in 2007, compared to eighty-three percent of NH seniors, and forty-eight percent nationally.
  • Souhegan SAT scores for both Math and Verbal have been consistently higher than the NH and national scores since 1993.  
  • Eighty-eight percent of Souhegan’s Class of 2007 went to college, four percent entered the work force, two percent chose to go into the Military, and six percent went on to other activities (prep school, service organization, etc). 
  • Souhegan has one of the lowest dropout rates (1.2%) in the state.  Many of these students finish graduation requirements during the summer or in a fifth year to earn a Souhegan Diploma. 
  • Forty-eight percent of the 2007 graduating class are attending either most competitive, highly competitive or very competitive colleges, as defined by Barrons’s Guide to Colleges.
  • Current students and graduates from Souhegan presented their work on biodiversity at the United Nations Summit in Montreal, Canada, in 2007. 
  • Souhegan students studied in Italy, Germany, Mexico, Spain and the Dominican Republic through programs organized by Souhegan Staff. 
  • Souhegan is 14th in the state in beginning teacher salaries.  Dresden is highest at $35,895; Souhegan is $34,100.   (2006-07 figures) 
  • Souhegan ranks 19th in NH for cost per pupil ($11,443).  (2005-06 figures) 
  • Souhegan average teacher salary ranks 29th in the state.
  • In 2007, Souhegan Students took AP exams in 17 different subjects. In 2006-07, 218 AP exams were given (student population of 1019). 
  • Souhegan offers 2 college credit courses (Western Civilization and Biological World). 
  • Sixty-five students took an AP Calculus exam. The average score was 3.9 on a scale of      1  to 5.  The national average was a 3.1. 
  • Souhegan was recognized by the state for the outstanding scores of students on the math and science AP exams. 
  • Souhegan is one of a very few schools in the state to offer AP Geography. 
  • Students participated in 4 instrumental groups: concert band, jazz band, marching band and jazz combo. 
  • The Souhegan Concert and Jazz bands took first place when competing in Toronto, Canada. The Concert Choir earned First Place at the NYC Musical Festival. 
  • Five Souhegan Students received gold Key Visual Arts Awards and two received Silver Key Awards in the NH Scholastic Art Competition. 
  • Ninety-eight Souhegan students took the national Latin Exam in 2007.  Seventy percent scored higher than the national average.  Fourteen received gold medals, 16 silver, 14 magna cum laude, and 19 cum laude. 
  • Souhegan athletic teams won 14 team sportsmanship certificates in 06-07.  Souhegan finished 2nd in the class I for sportsmanship, based on coaches and referees input. 
  • During 2006-07, 984 Souhegan students competed in athletics at Souhegan High School
  • The Class of 2007 contributed close to 21,000 hours of community service.
